Keeping Them Honest

RLN has determined that the new Alden Mills Firehouse construction at 140 Lynnway, Revere, MA 02151 was illegal, and will most likely need to come down. The larger building footprint with added community meeting room and expanded side entrance and lobby should never have been considered. Not only because of the firehouse's obvious proximity to natural marsh and wetlands, but also becasue the area has simply been over developed. Utility lines are now coming up through the ground cracking roads, sidewalks, and driveways.

It is unclear who will be on the hook for the $12,208,800.00.00 cost of construction, the additional cost to remove the illegal structure, and costs for damage to nearby properties from this shameful development. It is clear that the city has a mess on its hands. The question is, will anyone be held accountable? Former Revere Mayor and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Brian Arrigo hopes not.

History: The people of Point of Pines neighborhood had long been without a local fire station since the closure of the original Alden Mills Firehouse back in 1991 due to budget cuts. What started off as a positive re-investment into the community quickly turned into just another government project, with multiple agencies looking to get involved in the graft. The new project was completed through the shared efforts and co-operation of the City of Revere, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (MassDCR), and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Wetlands Program.

With the unconstitutional MBTA Communities Act. providing cover, city and state leaders were able to expand upon the original facility footprint, triggering a need for variance relief and changes to local residential zoning and building laws. RLN believes that through these variance changes, and with the confusion of the Covid-19 Pandemic, city and state leaders were able to move forward with this and the similarly illegal Gibson Point Development.

Although political leaders intended to change zoning laws in the Point of Pines community with construction of the new Alden Mills Firehouse, they never legally completed the process and therefore this building will need to come down. The City of Revere failed to record passed variance A-21-17 within one year of its passage by the Revere Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) on May 26, 2021.

Additionally, the city never completed the required ANR land swap with either MassDOT or MassDCR. It is not entirely clear which state agency had ownership of the land in question. Mayor Brian Arrigo's letter to the Revere City Council does not clearly identify the Alden Mills Firehouse at 140 Lynnway or any particular parcel of land. In any event the ANR was never recorded in the Suffolk Registry of Deeds as stipulated in the City of Revere Site Plan Review Report, bullet one.

September 23, 2021: Revere Mayor letter to Revere City Council identifying a kiosk at Wonderland Train Station, and construction of essential public fire safety facilities.

Note: This is the only evidence the city has produced identifying its intention to annex state land through an ANR process. The letter does not identify the Alden Mills Firehouse at 140 Lynnway, and it could be that the mayor's letter simply identified additional facilities at Wonderland Station. RLN believe the mayor was purposefully vague in his identification of a public safety facilities because the land in question involved protected wetlands.

November 24, 2025: Email Freedom of Information Act requesting permitting records for street/sidewalk opening and paving work performed in the overnight hours from October 26, 2025 thru November 3, 2025.

Note: The City of Revere reported not having records related to my request. According to a member of the crew that did the work, they were out of Falmouth. The worker knocked on my door attempting to locate the owner of a vehicle they needed moved. The targeted paving project tells me that others in the area have also been bothered by the new construction going on at the Alden Mills Firehouse and the Gibson Point Development in Revere's new Riverfront District.

My driveway has suffered large cracks from infrastructure/utility lines coming up through the paved surface. The foundation shows signs of stress, and the continuing movements and vibrations make the home uncomfortable, and possibly unsellable.
